Lower Back Pain Treatment

Lower back pain is, unfortunately, very common. It is reported that 8 in 10 people has suffered or will suffer with lower back pain during their lifetime. Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons a person will seek medical care and advice. And is most certainly one of the most common presentations to a Chiropractor.

Causes of Lower Back Pain
In some cases the cause of lower back pain is linked to a particular injury, accident or trauma. However in a lot of cases there is no particular incident rather a combination and accumulation of factors. These factors can include poor standing, sitting and/or lying posture, sitting for long periods of time, incorrect lifting techniques, carrying, pushing or pulling loads that are too heavy or completing the task with poor technique and being over weight.

There are also more serious but less common causes of lower back pain. These include fracture in the bone, a tear in the ligaments or muscles, a disc injury or degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis, arthritic conditions including osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, and conditions that decrease the size of the space within the spinal column such as spondylolisthesis.

Symptoms
The most common symptoms include muscle spasms and cramping and general stiffness in the area of concern. Pain can be described as a dull ache to sharp and shooting in nature. It is not uncommon to a person to report symptoms of pain referring into their legs.

Diagnosis
The Chiropractor will utilize many tools during their assessment to determine the cause of lower back pain. To begin with the Chiropractor will take a thorough history to gain a complete understanding of the condition and how it is affecting the person. The chiropractor will then undertake a comprehensive physical examination utilizing neurological and orthopedic testing to diagnose the condition. If required the Chiropractor may refer for x-rays or further imagining.
